septoplasty

The medical condition known as the deviant septum is an unfortunate situation for many individuals. A badly deviated septum can lead to impeding of the airways and trouble breathing through the nose. This type of affliction is often cited as a cause for chronic sinus issues and infection as well. Chronic snorers may also suffer from this ailment. To correct this issue there is a form of plastic surgery known as septoplasty. Septoplasty is reshaping of the septum in layman’s terms.

To perform this procedure a qualified plastic surgeon will need to perform the more drastic of the two rhinoplasty methods, the open method. The open method of rhinoplasty involves cutting the colmunella and lifting the skin of the nose up so that the doctor can reach a greater area of the nasal cavity.

During septoplasty the plastic surgeon will cut away excess bone and cartilage typically leaving only a centimeter wide strip of septum to divine the nose. in some cases the surgeon will then implant either new cartilage from another section of the patient’s body or surgical grade plastic implants. This is to help support the nose.

Typical side effects of this surgery include swelling and the possible sensation of stiffness or lack of sensation known as numbness. Numbness normally alleviates in a few months but stiffness is normally permanent. In the cases of many individuals with badly deviated septum the existence of a stiff feeling in the nose is overlooked in favor of being able to breath so much easier.
